The First April Fool’s Day In Russia

День смеха, ‘Day of Laughter, or День дурака, Fool’s Day, as it is also known first took place in Moscow in 1703.

The town criers walked through the streets and invited everyone to attend an неслыханное представление or ‘unprecedented presentation.’ The people who attended didn’t dare question why as they wanted to see this “unprecedented presentation” for themselves.

And when, at the appointed hour, the curtains opened, everyone saw on the stage a piece of paper with the inscription:

“Первый апрель — никому не верь!”

“April First – Trust no one!”

Thus ended this ‘unprecedented presentation’ and the first April Fool’s Day in Russia.
